LAWRENCE, William John, Author and Journalist: b. 29th October. 1862. Educ. at Methodist College, Belfast; lecturer on Shakespeare in several American, Universities, 1917: granted a Civil List Pension, 1922, in recognition of his services to the history and literature of the Drama. LAWSON, Lieut.-Gen. Sir Henry Merrick, K.C.B (1918). Educ: Cheltenham College and R.M.A., Woolwich; joined the Royal Engineers in June, 1877, and remained in the Army until he retired in 1921. He served in the Suakim Campaign and the Nile Expedition, 1884-85 and received a Brevet-Majority; In the Sudan Campaign under Lord Kitchener in 1898 he was dangerously wounded and promoted Lieut.-Col. He served throughout the South African War, 1899-1902, including the Siege of Ladysmith. in various appointments, and was made A.D.C. to the Queen. In the European War. after being Commander-in-Chief of the Northern Command, 1915-16, he was employed on special duty in France, Egypt, and Salonika, and was Inspector-General of Communications in Italy, 1917-18.
