McCORMACK, John, tenor; won the Denza Gold Medal for tenor singing at the National Irish Festival in 1903; made his concert debut at Dublin in 1903; joined the Choir of the Catholic Cathedral in Dublin; afterwards went to Milan where he studied with Sabatini; his operatic début in "L'Amico Fritz" at Savonal in 1905; first appeared in opera in England at Covent Garden in "Cavalleria Rusticana" in 1907, and has been heard every year since in many roles at the Royal Opera House; made his début in America in "Traviata" in 1909,; went to Italy and sang with Mme Tetrazzini and Signor Marcoux at the Opera House in Parma under the baton of Signor Campanini in 1910; appeared as principal tenor with Madame Melba in Australia in Italian Opera in 1911, and toured America in concert in 191-2, and toured Australia in 1913, returning to London after having given over 100 concerts; appeared in numerous roles during the Covent Garden grand season not only maintaining but increasing his great reputation during 1914; has had equal success on the concert platform, frequently appearing in London at the Albert Hall, Queen's Hall, etc., etc; became a naturalized American citizen 1919: born at Athlone, Co. McCRUM, William Scott; b. 17th Jan. 1898. Educ.: Sullivan School, Holywood, Co. Down; Municipal College of Technology, Belfast; studied School of Art, Belfast; Exhibited Dublin, Liverpool, etc., chiefly watercolours. Recns.: theatre, tennis, and book collecting. Club: Ulster Arts, Belfast.
