OF THE PALE CRIMINAL 47

Many things in your good ones cause loathsomeness unto me not what is evil in them. I even wish they had a madness from which they might perish like this pale criminal.

Indeed I wish their madness could be named truth or faithfulness or justice : but they have their virtue to live long and in a miserable ease.

I am a railing alongside the stream ; whoever is able to seize me, may seize me. Your crutch, how- ever, I am not."

Thus spake Zarathustra.
