Everything, poor living, self-denial, hard work, humility itself,—everything is necessary for no other end than to enable one to live with mankind; to live with them, that is, to love them. But if there be no love, then all the rest is worthless. All our ploughing is done so that what is sown may spring up; but if we trample the young crops, then where was the good of ploughing?
