THOMAS'S (ESOPHAGOSTOME. 55

character and could not therefore be valid was actually demonstrated by the illustrations of specimens that had just been shown by Dr. Thomas. In allied genera one found distinctive specific characters, especially in the configuration of the mouth capsule, but none were mentioned here. He doubted therefore the wisdom of regarding this South American form as new and distinct from the common African Œsophagostomum stephanostomum. Dr. Thomas' excellent and exceedingly valuable description would nevertheless always remain as the first real case of Œsophagostomiasis in man.

Dr. Thomas said he had to thank Dr. Leiper for his remarks. He presented this subject to the Society that evening because he wished to publish his report in January and had to give the plates to his printer. He would endeavour to send Dr. Leiper some male specimens for examination. He was very pleased to find that the Œsophagostome of Brazil differed from the Œsophagostome which Brumpt had described, and certainly if one read Professor Railliet's description of the Œsophagostome and compared it with the Brazilian variety, it was quite evident that they were slightly different, but he thought this difference was chiefly in the lamella.
