DEPARTED.

I LAY down upon my bed,
With a somewhat aching head,
And mine eyes disposed for tears :
News of death had come that day,
Of a kinsman far away,
Who had shared my childhood's play ;
And one word rang in mine ears, —
Departed !

Back on all my thoughts it came,
Answering to every name,
Every feeling, grave or gay
Every picture dark or bright —
As the hours marched through the night.
Till the word seemed like a sprite
I could neither soothe nor lay :
Departed !
