SOSPIRI VOLATE.

The waterfall kept dropping,
" Drip, drip," for evermore ;
The little pool beneath it
With diamonds ran o'er.
A word had just been spoken,
The answer yet remained, —
A step upon the greensward, —
I momently refrained.

Two stranger eyes bent on me,
So grave, and pure, and sad,
Such eyes as those my brother,
Who was not, might have had.
They changed my coming sentence
From plausible to true :
I might have wrecked two lives, dear,
If it had not been for you.
