POESY AND THE POET.
255

His heavy-lidded eyes awoke,
He gazed into her face. .
"O queen of all my wanderings,
Wilt grant me this one grace ?

" If I should conquer, let it be
By holy love of thee ;
If I be vanquished, let me die
Where I thy face can see."

Then lowly, lowly stooped the queen,
And softly kissed his cheek.
Thereon the Wisdom King arose,
And solemnly did speak :

" Go, mortal, on thy toilsome quest,
Not pain but doubt is o'er ;
The knight who once the queen has kissed
Is hers for evermore."
