LIGHT AT EVENING.

ALL these years-!
And I have never known it, oh my God !
What had I done, that thou shouldst blind me so ?
I feeling dumbly after other hearts
That cared not for me ; this one all mine own.

Was it indeed so ? didst thou draw me, dear,
By subtle spirit motion, that I knew
There was a soul that loved me in the world,
And knew not it was thine ?

Fear me ; how couldst thou ? fear a butterfly,
A little beggar child upon the road,
A bird with broken wings, fear feeblest things,
But me, how couldst thou fear ?
