Permitted Variants: The name of a country may be added to or substituted for that of a county or region. The crest may he omitted. The lettering may be in any colour except red providing a contrast is maintained with the background. The background may be any colour except red, yellow or dark green

Name of town or village commencing immediately ahead
Permitted Variants: The name of a river, inland waterway or a road junction may be substituted for the name of a town or village. The name of the district council may be omitted. In London the name of a London Borough may be substituted for the district council name. The crest of a town, village or in London the Borough may be added The lettering may be in any colour except red providing a contrast is maintained with the background. The background may be any colour except red, yellow, or dark green The names of one or two towns or villages outside the United Kingdom with which the town or village indicated by the sign is associated may be added beneath that indication either preceded by the words "TWINNED WITH" or "TWIN TOWN" or "TWIN TOWNS" as is appropriate or in the case of a town's indication followed by whichever of the latter two expressions ls appropriate
