apparatus (including the content of all instructions stored in, or executable try it) used to secure that the said traffic signs comply with the relevant provisions of the Regulations shall he on type which has been approved in writing by or on behalf of the Secretary of State before the said traffic signs are paced on or near any road.

(3) If after any traffic sign to which this paragraph applies has been placed on or near any road, the said electrical or other apparatus by which the sign is brought into and taken out or use, or which is used to secure that the sign complies with the relevant provisions or the Regulations, is altered so as to enable any further instruction to be stored in, or made executable by, the apparatus, the said sign shall not be further used unless that alteration is of a type which has been approved in writing by or on behalf of the secretary of State.

42. At least one road marking of the kind shown in diagram 1014 shall be placed for use in conjunction with a road marking of the kind shown in diagram 1013.1 on the length or carriageway which extends backwards from the commencement of any continuous line marked on the carriageway as a part of the last mentioned road marking so shown, such commencement being viewed in the direction of travel or a vehicle driven so as to have and keep that continuous line on the right hand or offside thereof in accordance with Regulation 23(2)(b) of the Regulations, and if more than one road marking of the kind first above-mentioned is placed on the said length or carriageway then those road markings shall be so spaced apart that one follows in in line in front of the other.

43. Nothing in these Directions shall be taken to limit the power of the secretary or state acting as the appropriate Minister by any special Direction to dispense with, add to modify any of the requirements or these Directions in their application to any particular case.

Gneral Citation and commencement.

This Instrument may be cited as the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 1981, and shall come into operation on 13th August l98l.

Explanatory Note

The Instrument in Part l re-enacts with amendment the Traffic signs Regulations 1975 (S.I. 1975/1536). The principal changes are:

  1. Regulation 9A prescribes the size, colour, type and significance or the sign shown in diagram 610 providing a special significance for emergency vehicles (Regulation 9A(3)).
