Public Law 100-317 100th Congress Joint Resolution May 13, 1988 [S.J. Res. 240]
TO designate the period commencing on May 16, 1988 and ending on May 22, 1988, as "National Safe Kids Week".
Whereas the children of the United States represent the most precious natural resource of the United States; Whereas each year approximately one out of every four children under the age of fifteen in the United States is involved in an accident; Whereas injuries resulting from accidents are the leading cause of death among children in the United States, claiming the lives of nearly eight thousand children each year; Whereas approximately fifty thousand children in the United States are left permanently disabled because of accidental injuries each year; Whereas the incidence and seriousness of such injuries can be significantly reduced through preventive measures and appropriate treatments; and Whereas adults and children in the United States should become aware of the frequency and nature of accidental injuries to children, and of the need to undertake preventive measures and seek appropriate treatment: Now, therefore, be it Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled. That the period commencing on May 16, 1988 and ending on May 22, 1988, is designated "National Safe Kids Week", and the President is authorized and requested to issue a proclamation calling upon the people of the United States to observe such week with appropriate ceremonies and activities.
