Subtitle A—Duties and Functions of Department of Defense Officers SEC. 901. DEPUTY UNDER SECRETARY OF DEFENSE FOR PERSONNEL AND READINESS. (a) ESTABLISHMENT OF POSITION. —(1) Chapter 4 of title 10, United States Code, is amended by inserting after section 136 the following new section:

    • § 136a. Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel

and Readiness "(a) There is a Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel President. and Readiness, appointed from civilian life by the President, by Congress. and with the advice and consent of the Senate. "(b) The Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness shall assist the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness in the performance of the duties of that position. The Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness shall act for, and exercise the powers of, the Under Secretary when the Under Secretary is absent or disabled.".
