SEC.584 . PROT ECT I O N O F C H I LD C U STOD YA RRAN G E M ENTS FOR PAR - ENTS W HO ARE MEM B ERS OF THE ARMED FORCES DEPLOYED IN SUPPORT OF A CONTINGENCY OPERATION. (a) P ROTE C T I ON OF SER V ICE M EM B ERS A GA INST DEFAULT J UDG- MENTS.—Section 2 01(a) of the Ser v icemembers C ivil Relief Act ( 5 0 U .S.C. App. 521(a)) is amended by inserting ‘ ‘, including any child custody proceeding, ’ ’ after ‘‘proceeding’’. (b) STAY OF PROCEEDINGS WH EN SERVICEMEMBER H AS NOTICE.—Section 202(a) of the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (50 U.S.C. App. 522(a)) is amended by inserting ‘‘, including any child custody proceeding,’’ after ‘‘civil action or proceeding’’. SEC. 585. FAMILY LEA V E IN CONNECTION WITH IN J URED MEMBERS OF THE ARMED FORCES. (a) SERVICEMEMBER F AMILY L EAVE.— (1) DEFINITIONS.—Section 101 of the Family and M edical Leave Act of 1 9 9 3 (29 U.S.C. 2 6 11) is amended by adding at the end the following new paragraphs

‘‘(1 4 ) ACTIVE DUTY.— T he term ‘active duty’ means duty under a call or order to active duty under a provision of law referred to in section 101(a)(13)( B ) of title 10, United States Code. ‘‘(15) CONTINGENCY OPERATION.—The term ‘contingency operation’ has the same meaning given such term in section 101(a)(13) of title 10, United States Code. ‘‘(16) COVERED SERVICEMEMBER.—The term ‘covered servicemember’ means a member of the Armed Forces, including a member of the National G uard or Reserves, who is undergoing medical treatment, recuperation, or therapy, is otherwise in outpatient status, or is otherwise on the temporary disability retired list, for a serious in j ury or illness. ‘‘(17) O UTPATIENT STATUS.—The term ‘outpatient status’, with respect to a covered servicemember, means the status of a member of the Armed Forces assigned to— ‘‘(A) a military medical treatment facility as an out- patient

or ‘‘(B) a unit established for the purpose of providing command and control of members of the Armed Forces receiving medical care as outpatients. ‘‘(18) NE X TOF K IN.—The term ‘next of k in’, used with respect to an individual, means the nearest blood relative of that individual. ‘‘(19) SERIOUS IN J URY OR ILLNESS.—The term ‘serious injury or illness’, in the case of a member of the Armed Forces, including a member of the National Guard or Reserves, means an injury or illness incurred by the member in line of duty on active duty in the Armed Forces that may render the
