SEC. 616. INTERNS H I P S. Section 62 5 (20 U.S.C. 1131c) is amended— (1) in subsection (a)— ( A ) by striking ‘‘as defined in section 322 of this Act’’; ( B ) by striking ‘‘tribally controlled Indian community colleges as defined in the Tribally Controlled Community College Assistance Act of 1 978 ’’ and inserting ‘‘tribally con- trolled colleges or universities, Alaska N ative-serving, Native H awaiian-serving, and Hispanic-serving institu- tions’’; (C) by striking ‘‘an international’’ and inserting ‘‘inter- national,’’; and ( D ) by striking ‘‘the United States Information Agency’’ and inserting ‘‘the Department of State’’; (2) in subsection (b)— (A) by inserting ‘‘and’’ after the semicolon at the end of paragraph (2); (B) by striking ‘‘; and’’ at the end of paragraph (3) and inserting a period; and (C) by striking paragraph (4); and (3) in subsection (c)(1)— (A) in subparagraph ( E ), by inserting ‘‘and’’ after the semicolon; (B) in subparagraph ( F ), by striking ‘‘; and’’ and inserting a period; and (C) by striking subparagraph ( G ). SEC. 61 7 . F INANCIAL ASSISTANCE. P art C of title V I (20 U.S.C. 1131 et se q .) is further amended— (1) by redesignating sections 626, 627, and 628 as sections 627, 628, and 629, respectively; and (2) by inserting after section 625 the following

‘SEC. 6 2 6. FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE. ‘‘(a) A UTHORI T Y .—The Institute may provide financial assist- ance, in the form of summer stipends described in subsection (b) and R alph Bunche scholarship assistance described in subsection (c), to low-income students to facilitate the participation of the students in the Institute’s programs under this part. ‘‘(b) SU M M E R STI P E NDS .— ‘‘(1) RE Q UIREMENTS.—A student receiving a summer sti- pend under this section shall use such stipend to defray the student’s cost of participation in a summer institute program funded under this part, including the costs of travel, living, 20USC1 1 3 1 c– 1 . 20 USC 1131 d –1131 f .
