LAND()r1¤1cn: For the Commissioner of the General Land G°“"“"L““" °“°°· Omce, five thousand dollars; Assistant Commissioner, to be apted by the President, by and with the advice and consent of the gghlate, who shall be authorized to sign such letters, papers, and documents and to perform such other duties as may be directed by the Commissioner, and shall act as Comrmssioner in the absence of that officer or in case of a vacancy in the office of Commksioner, three thousand five hundred dollars; chief clerk, two thousand five hundred dollars; chief law clerk, two thousand five hundred dollars; two law clerks, at two . thousand two hundred dollars each; three inspectors of surveyors- · general and district land offices, at two thousand dollars each; recorder, two thousand dollars; one chief ot division of surveys, two thousand seven hundred and fifty dollars; one chief of division, two thousand four hundred dollars; nine chiefs of division, at two thousand dollars each; two law examiners, at two thousand dollars each; ten principal examiners of land claims and mntests, at two thousand dollars each; two examiners of mineral claims and contests, at two thousand dollars each; thirtyueéght elerksof class four (includin one transferred from Seere¤:ry’s ce?; sixty-four clerks of class three; sixty-nine clerks of class two ipc uding two transferred from Secretary’s office); seventy-two cler of class one (including three transferred from Secretary’s oi5ce);_sixty clerks, at one thousand dollars each (including three transferred from Secretaryboffice); sixltgccopyists; two messengers; ten assistant messengers; six skilled rers, who may act as assistant messengers when required, at six hundred and sixty dollars each; sixteen laborers; one laborer, four hundred and eighty dollars; one packer, seven hundred and twenty dollars; one depositary actin? for the Commissioner as receiver of public moneys, two thousand do - lars; clerk and librarian, one thousand dollars; in all, five hundred and seventy-two thousand four hundred and fift dollars. _ That hereafter the Secretaay of the Interior he, and he is hereby 0('§`1$l';}}};d"{,',}’e*}f"”““* authorizedtp designate an officer or employee of the General Land Oiiice to act temporarily as Assistant Commissioner of that Office during the absence of the Assistant Commissioner, or in case of a vacancy in the office of such Assistant Commissioner, or when such Assistant Commissioner is acting as Commissioner, and all acts performed by _ any officer or employee while acting under such designation shall have the same force and effect as if performed by said Commissioner or Assistant Commissioner. That hereafter the Secretar of the Interior be, and he is hereby, "`°¤*P°"*¤"’°°"‘"· authorized to designate an officer or employee of the General Land Office to perform temporarily the duties of the Recorder of that office in the absence of that oflioer and in the case of a vacancy in the office of such Recorder, and the acts of any person so designated shall have all the force and effect of an act performed by the Recorder. For r diem in lieu of subsistence of inspectors and of clerks v;gg§;Qj °‘°·· m' detailed7c investigate fraudulent land entries, trespasses on the public lands, and cases of official misconduct, while traveling on duty, at a rate to be fixed by the Secretary of the Interior, not exceeding three dollars per day, and for actual necessary expenses of transportation, including necessary sleeping-car fares, and for employment of stenographers and other assistants when necessary to the efficient conduct of examinations, and when authorized by the Commissioner of the General Land Office, seven thousand dollars.
