657 The Commissioners of the District of Columbia are authorized and empowered, in their discretion, to fix or alter the respective widths of sidew alks and roadw ays (incl uding tre e spa ces a nd pa rkin g) of all high ways that may be i mprov ed un der appro priat ions cont ained in this Act . For construction and repair of sidewalks and curbs around public reservations and municipal and United States buildings, $10,000 . No part of any appropriation contained in this Act shall be avail- able for repairing, resurfacing, or newly paving any street, avenue, or roadway by private contract unless the specifications for such work shall be so prepared as to permit of fair and open competition in paving material as well as in price . In add ition to the provi sion of e xisting l aw requir ing contr actors to keep new pavements in repair for a period of one year from the date of the completion of the work, the Commissioners of the District of Columbia shall further require that where repairs are necessary du ring the four years foll owin g the said one -year peri od, d ue t o inferior work or defective materials, such repairs shall be made at the expense of the contractor, and the bond furnished by the contractor shall be liable for such expense . BRIDGES

Bridges . Changing sidewalk widths, etc . Sidewalks, etc. Open competition for street improvement contracts. Repairs for inferior work, etc ., by contrac- tors, required for addi- tional period . For construction and repair of bridges, including maintenance of nonpassenger-carrying motor vehicles, $50,000 . Highway Bridge across Potomac River : For personal services in accordance with the Classification Act of 1923, $9,780 ; labor, $1,920 ; power, miscellaneous supplies, and expenses of every kind necessarily inciden t to the operation a nd maintenance of th e bridge and approaches, $7,360 ; in all, $19,060 . Anacostia River Bridge : For employees, miscellaneous supplies, and expenses of every kind necessary to operation and maintenance of the bridge, $6,000. Francis Scott Key Bridge : For miscellaneous supplies and expenses Francis of every kind necessarily incident to the maintenance of the bridge and approaches, including personal services, $2,000 . For reconstruction of the floor system of the Highway Bridge s y st e m , Hi Reconstructing g hwa fio y across the Potomac River, including personal services and other Br idge . necessary expenses, $178,000, to be immediately available . TREES AND PARKINGS For contingent expenses, including laborers, trimmers, nursery- men, repairmen, teamsters, hire of carts, wagons, or motor trucks, trees, tree boxes, tree stakes, tree straps, tree labels, planting and care of t rees on c ity and s uburban s treets, c are of tr ees, tree spaces, purchase and maintenance of nonpassenger-carrying motor vehicles, and miscellaneous items, $112,500. PUBLIC CONVENIENCE STATIONS Fo r mai nten ance of pu blic conv enien ce st atio ns, i nclud ing c om- pensati on of necess ary em ployee s, $28 ,000 . Th e une xpen ded b alanc e of appr opria tions now avai lable for the construction of a public convenience station numbered 5 at Ninth and F S treets , nort hwest, is re approp riated for th e cons tructi on of a publi c conv enienc e stat ion in the v icinity of Th irty-s econd and M Streets, northwest.
