HOUSE OF DETENTION For maintenance of a suitable place for the reception and detention of girls and women over seventeen years of age, arrested by the police on ch arge of offen se against any laws in forc e in the Dist rict of Columbia, or held as witnesses or held pending final investigation or examination, or otherwise, including transportation, the purchase and maintenance of necessary motor vehicles, clinic supplies, food, upkeep and repair of buildings, fuel, gas, ice, laundry, supplies and equipment, electricity, and other necessary expenses, $8,880 ; for personal services, $7,120 ; in all, $16,000 . POLICEMEN AND FIREMEN'S RELIEF FUND To pay the relief and other allowances as authorized by law, such sum a s is necessar y for said pur poses for the fiscal year 1934 is appropriated from the policemen and firemen's relief fund . FI RE DEP ART MEN T SA LARIES For the pay of officers and members of the fire department, in accordance with the Act entitled "An Act to fix the salaries of offi- cers and members of the Metropolitan Police Force, the United States Park Police Force, and the fire department of the District of Colum- bia" (43 Stat . 175), as amended by the Act of July 1, 1930 (46 Stat . 839-841), $1,800,000. prescribed by department regulations as necessary and requisite in the performance of duty to officers and members of the fire department, including cleaning, alteration, and repair of articles transferred from one individual to another, $21,000 . For repairs to apparatus, motor vehicles, and other motor-driven apparatus, fire boat and for new apparatus, new motor vehicles, new appli ances, employ ment of mechan ics, helpers, and laborers in the fire department repair shop, and for the purchase of necessary sup- plies, materials, equipment, and tools, $41,000 : Provided, That the Commissioners are authorized, in th eir discretio n, to build or construct, in whole or in part, fire-fighting apparatus in the fire depar tment repair shop . For hose, $9,000 . For fuel, $20,000 . For contingent expenses, furniture, fixtures, oil , blac ksmitli ing gas and electric lighting, flags and halyards, medals of award, anc~ other necessary items, $20,000 .
