TI TLE 111- DEPA RTME NT OF CO MMER CE OFFICE OF THE SECRETARY S a la r ie s : Secretary of Commerce, tw o Assistant S ecretaries, an d other personal services in the District of Columbia, including the chief clerk and superintendent, who shall be chief executive officer of the Department and who may be designated by the Secretary of Commerce to sign officia l papers and documents duri ng the tem- porary absence of the Secretary and the Assistant Secretaries, of the Department, $326,000 . C ont ing ent ex pen ses : For c ontingent and miscellaneous expenses of the Offices and bureaus of the Department, except the Patent Office, including those for which appropriations for contingent and miscellaneous expenses are specifically made, including professional and scientific books, law books, books of reference periodicals, blank books, pamphlets, maps, newspapers (not exceeding $2,800) ; pu r- chase of atlases or maps ; stationery ; furniture and repairs to same ; carpets, matting, oilcloth, file cases , towels, ice , brooms, soap sponges ; fuel, lighting, and heating ; purchase and exchange of motor trucks and bicycles ; maintenance, repair, and operation of three motor-propelled passenger-carrying vehicles (one for the Sec- retary of Commerce and two for the general use of the Department), and motor trucks and bicycles, to be used only for official purposes

freight and express charges ; postage to foreign countries ; tele- graph and telephone service ; typewriters, adding machines, and other labor-saving devices, including their repair and exchange ; fir st-aid outfit s for use in the buildings occupied by emp loyees of this Department ; street-car fares, not exceeding $600 ; and all other miscellaneous items and necessary expenses not included in the foregoing, $121,000, which sum shall constitute the appropriation for contingent expenses of the Department, except the Patent Office, and shall also be available for the purchase of necessary supplies and equipment for field services of bureaus and offices of the Depart- ment for which contingent and miscellaneous appropriations are speci fically made in order to fa cilitate the purchase thro ugh the ce ntra l pu rcha sing off ice (Division of Purchases and Sales), as provided by law . Printing and binding : For all printing and binding for the Depart- me nt of Conuner ce, inc luding all of its bu reaus, office s, inst itutio ns, and services in the District of Columbia and elsewhere, except the Patent Office, $350,410 : Provid ed, That an amount not to exceed $2,000 of this appropriation may be expended for salaries of persons det ailed from th e Government Printing Offic e for service as copy editors.
