COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY For every expenditure requisite for and incident to the work of the Co ast a nd Geo detic Surve y, inc luding maint enanc e, rep air, exchange , and op eration of motor -propell ed or ho rse-draw n vehicl es for official use in field work, purchase of motorcycles with side cars, including their exchange, not to exceed $500, surveying instruments, including their exchange, rubber boots, canvas and rubber gloves, goggles, and caps, coats, and aprons for stewards' departments on vessels, extra compensation at not to exceed $1 per day for each station to employees of the Lighthouse Service and the Weather Bureau while observing tides or currents, services of one tide observer in the District of Columbia at not to exceed $1 per day, and compensation, not otherwise appropriated for, of persons employed in the field wo rk, for travel a nd other expense s incide nt to the execution of field work upon approval by the head of the Bureau, and for expenses in an amount not to exceed $150 of attend- ance at meetings concern ed with the work of the Coast an d Geodet ic Survey when incurred on the written authority of the Secretary of Commerce , to be expended in acco rdance w ith the regulati ons rela t- ing to the Coast and Geodetic Survey subscribed by the Secretary of Commerce, and under the following heads F ield exp enses, A tlantic and Gulf coast : For surveys and neces- sary resurveys of the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the United States, including the coasts of outlying islands under the jurisdiction of the United States, and including the employment in the field and office of one physicist to develop survey methods based on transmission of sound through sea water, $119,000 : Provided, That not more than $35,000 of this amount shall be expended on the coasts of said out- lying islands and the Atlantic entranc e to the Panama Canal ; Pacific coast : For surveys and necessary resurveys of coasts on the Pacific Ocean under the jurisdiction of the United States, and includ- ing the employment in the field and office of one physicist to develop survey methods based on transmission of sound through sea water, $158,000 ; Tides, currents, and so forth : For continuing researches in physi- cal hydrography, relating to harbors and bars, and for tidal and current observations on the coasts of the United States, or other coasts under the jurisdiction of the United States, $13,500 ;
