1885 incidental expenses not otherwise provided for, including not to exceed $2,000 for travel and field expenses in the United States and foreign countries for the procurement of live specimens and for the care, subsist ence, and transpo rtation of specim ens obtained in t he course of such travel ; maintenance and opera tion of o ne motor- propelled passenger-carrying vehicle required for official purposes ; for the purchase, issue, operation, maintenance, repair, and exchange of bicycles and non-passenger-carrying motor vehicles, revolvers and ammunition ; not exceeding $2,500 for purchasing and supplying uniforms to park police, keepers, and assistant keepers ; not exceed- ing $100 for the purchase o f necessar y books a nd periodi cals, $225,000, no part of which sum shall be available for architect's fees or compensat ion . WA TER S ERV ICE The following sums are appropriated wholly out of the revenues of the water department for expenses of the Washington aqueduct and its appurtenances and for expenses of water department, namely WASHINGTON AQUEDUCT For operation, including salaries of all necessary employees, maintenance and repair of Washington aqueducts and their acces- sories, including Dalecarlia, Geor getown, McMillan Park, first and second High Service Reservoirs, Washington aqueduct tunnel, the filtration plants, the pumping plants and the plant for the prelim- inary treatment of the water supply, ordinary repairs, grading, open- ing ditche s, and oth er mainte nance of C onduit Roa d, purcha se, installation, and maintenance of w ater meters on Fe deral services, purchase, care, repair, and operation of vehicles, including the pur- chase and exchange of one passenger-carrying motor vehicle ata cost not to exceed $650 ; purchase and repair of rubber boots and protective apparel, and for each and every purpose connected there- with, $470,000 . Nothing herein shall be construed as affecting the superintendence and control of the Secretary of War over the Washington aqueduct, its rights, appurtenances, and fixtures connected with the same and over appropriations and expenditures therefor as now provided by law . For revenue and inspection and distribution branches : For per- sonal services, $179,670 . For mai ntenance of the water department distribution syst em, in- cluding pumping stations and machinery, water mains, valves, fire and public hydrants, and all buildings and accessories, and motor trucks, and motor vehicles such as are now owned, a nd the replace- ment by purchase and exchange of the following motor-propelled veh icl es : One four -passenge r sedan at not to exceed $650 ; four trucks at not to exceed $750 each ; and one truck at not to exceed $8 5 0 ; pu rchase of fuel, o ils, waste, and other materials, and the employment of all labor necessary for the proper ex ecution of this work ; and for contingent expenses, including books, blanks, sta- tionery, printing and binding not to exceed $2,500 ; postage, pur- chase of technical reference books and periodicals not to exceed $275, and other necessary items, $7,500 ; in all for maintenance, $360,000, of which not exceeding $5,000 shall be available for operation of pumps at Bryant Street pumping station upon interruption of service from Dalecarlia pumping station .
