Be it ena cted by th e Senate a nd House o f Represen tatives of the United States o f America in Congress assembled, That the following sums are appropriated, out of any money in the Treasury not other- wise appropriated, for the Department of the Interior for the fiscal year endin g June 30, 1936, nam ely Interi or Department appropriations, fiscal year 1938 . 74TS CONGRESS . Whereas Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd and the lnelribers of the Sec ond By rd Anta rct ic Exp edit ion are returning home from a successful and heroic exploration of Antarctic lands, wherein they have extended our knowledge of this vast area by airplane flights, tractor and dog sled trips, making extended and valuable scientific observations ; and Whereas the members of the expedition have displayed a courage and devotion worthy of the highest traditions of American ex- ploration, and an unswerving loyalty to the superb leadership of their command er ; an d Whereas Rear Admiral Byrd has added another notable chapter to the annal s of Ameri can expedi tions by h is genius in organiz ing, transporting, and providing for the subsistence of his men while they carr ied on a p rogram of research i n twenty-t wo branche s of science under the most adverse conditions, and he personally dis- played exceptional gallantry in his lone vigil away from the Little America base in o rder to ma ke importa nt meteoro logical ob serva- tions : Therefore be it Resolved by the senate and House of Representatives of the United States o f America in Congress assembled, .That the gratitude of the Nation be extended to Admiral Byrd and to the members of his ex- ped ition, and that a co py of this resolutio n be appro priately i n- scribed and presented to him and to each member of the Second By rd Antarctic Expedition .
