HOUSE OF DETENTION For maintenance of a suitable place for the reception and deten- tion of girls and women over seventeen years of age, arrested by the police on charge of offense against any laws in force in the District of Columbia, or held as witnesses or held pending final investigation or examination, or otherwise, including transportation, the mainte- nance of ne cessar y mot or ve hicles , cli nic su pplie s, fo od, up keep and repair of buildings, fuel, gas, ice, laundry supplies and equipment, electricity, and other necessary expenses, 8,900 ; for personal serv- ices, $9,420 ; in all, $18,320 . FI RE DEPARTMENT SALARIES For the pay of officers and members of the fire department, in accordance w ith the Act entitled " An Act to f ix the sala ries of offi cers and members of the Metropolitan Police force, the United States Park Police force, and the fire department of the District of Colum- bia" (43 St at . 175), as amended b y the Act of July 1, 1930 (46 Stat . 839-841), $2,211,000 . For pers onal s ervic es, $5 ,620 . MISCELLANEOUS For repairs and improvements to buildings and grounds, $20,000 . Uniforms : For furnishing uniforms and other official equipment prescribed by department regulations as necessary and requisite in the performance of duty to officers and members of the fire depart- me nt, includi ng cleaning, alteration , and repai r of articl es transfer red from one individual to another, $23,000 . For repairs to apparatus, motor vehicles, and other motor-driven apparatus, fire boat and for new apparatus, new motor vehicles, new appliances, employm ent of mechanics, helpers, and laborers in the fire department repair shop, and for the purchase of necessary sup- plies, materials, equipment, and tools, $45,000 : Provided, That the Commissioners are authorized, in their discretion, to build or con- stru ct, in whol e or in par t, fire-fig hting appara tus in the fire depart - ment repair shop . For hose, $18,000 . For fuel, $23,500 . For conti ngent expen ses, furnitu re, fixture s, oil, bla cksmithing, gas and electric lighting, flags, and halyards, medals of award, and other necessary items, $22,500 .
