marshals in lieu of bailiffs at a rate not to exceed $12 per day: Provided, That of the amount herein appropriated $15,000 may be used for the emergency replacement of one prisoner-carrying bus upon certificate of the Attorney General. SPECIAL TEMPORARY ATTORNEYS A N D ASSISTANTS

For compensation and expenses of special temporary attorneys and assistants to the Attorney General, and to the United States attornej^s and other miscellaneous employees not otherwise provided for, employed by the Attorney General and with his approval by the United States attorneys, in special matters and cases without regard to civil-service and classification laws, $150,000: Provided, That the amount paid as compensation out of the funds herein appropriated to any person employed hereunder shall not exceed $15,000 per annum. FEES A N D EXPENSES OF WITNESSES

For expenses, mileage, and per diems of witnesses and for per diems in lieu of subsistence, as authorized by law, and not to exceed $225,000 for such compensation and expenses of witnesses (including expert witnesses) or informants pursuant to section 1 of the Act of July 28, 1950 (5 U.S.C. 341) and sections 4244^8 of title 18, United States Code; $1,550,000: Provided, That no part of the sum herein appropriated shall be used to pay any witness more than one attendance fee for any one calendar day.

For expenses necessary for the detection and prosecution of crimes against the United States; protection of the person of the President of the United States; acquisition, collection, classification and preservation of identification and other records and their exchange with, and for the official use of, the duly authorized officials of the Federal Government, of States, cities, and other institutions, such exchange to be subject to cancellation if dissemination is made outside the receivingdepartments or related agencies; and such other investigations regarding official matters under the control of the Department of Justice and the Department of State as may be directed by the Attorney General, including purchase (not to exceed seven hundred and seventy-five for replacement only) and hire of passenger motor vehicles; purchase at not to exceed $10,000, for replacement only, of one armored motor vehicle; firearms and ammunition; not to exceed $10,000 for taxicab hire to be used exclusively for the purposes set forth in this paragraph; not to exceed $4,500 for expenses of attendance at meetings of organizations concerned with the purposes of this appropriation; payment of rewards; and not to exceed $70,000 to meet unforeseen emergencies of a confidential character, to be expended under the direction of the Attorney General, and to be accounted for solely on his certificate; S101,450,000: Provided, That the compensation of the Director of the Bureau shall be $22,000 per annum so long as the position is held by the present incumbent. 84352 O - 58 - 7
