An Act
To recognize the organization known as the American Council of Learned Societies.
June 1, 1982 [H.R. 4769]
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the American United States of America in Congress assembled, CHARTER
1. The American Council of Learned Societies, organized and incorporated under the Nonprofit Corporation Act of the District of Columbia, is hereby recognized as such and is granted a charter. SECTION

POWERS
SEC. 2. American Council of Learned Societies (hereinafter 36 USC 1902. referred to as the "corporation") shall have only those powers granted to it through its bylaws and articles of incorporation filed in the State or States in which it is incorporated and subject to the laws of such State or. States. OBJECTS AND PURPOSES OF CORPORATION
SEC. 3. The objects and purposes of the corporation are those 36 USC 1903. provided in its articles of incorporation and shall include the advancement of the humanistic studies in all fields of learning and the maintenance and strengthening of relations among the national societies devoted to such studies, and the corporation shall function as authorized by the laws of the State or States where it is incorporated. SERVICE OF PROCESS
SEC. 4. With respect to service of process, the corporation shall 36 USC 1904. comply with the laws of the States in which it is incorporated and those States in which it carries on its activities in furtherance of its corporate purposes. MEMBERSHIP
SEC. 5. Eligibility for membership in the corporation and the 36 USC 1905. rights and privileges of members shall, except as provided in this Act, be as provided in the constitution and bylaws of the corporation. BOARD OF DIRECTORS; COMPOSITION; RESPONSIBIUTIES
