A HISTORY OF BERKSHIRE IN WANETINZ [WANTAGE] HUNDRET The same Robert holds ARDINTONE [Ard- ington *]. Eduin a freeman held it T.R.E. It was then (assessed) at 5 hides ; now (it is assessed) at 2 hides and i virgate. There is land for 2 ploughs. On the demesne is i ; and (there are) 3 villeins and 8 cottars with half a plough. There are 2 serfs and a mill worth (de) 1 1 shillings, and 26 acres of mea- dow. It is and was worth 4 pounds. The same Robert holds ARDINTONE [Ard- ington *]. Sawin a freeman held it T.R.E. It was then (assessed) at 9 hides ; now (it is assessed) at 4 hides and 3 virgates. There is land for 5 ploughs. On the demesne is I ; and (there are) 6 villeins and 5 serfs and 2 mills worth (de) 25 shillings. Cola, an Englishman, claims one of these mills, but Alwin and Goduin and Alvric give evidence that it always belonged to (jacuit in) Ardin- tone [Ardington]. It was worth 16 pounds (T.R.E); afterwards 12 pounds; now 16 pounds. The same Robert holds I hide 2 which Azor the steward (dispensator) of King Edward held and could go with it to what lord he wished (et cum ea ire potuit quo voluit). It was then (assessed) at i hide ; now (it is assessed) at nothing. There is land for 2 ploughs. On the demesne is i ; and (there are) 1 1 cot- tars with half a plough ; and 10 acres of meadow. This land the same Azor holds of Robert, but the men of the Hundret (court) give evidence that he ought to hold it of the king, since King William gave it to him at Windesores [Windsor] and put the writ into his hands there ; Robert on the other hand holds it unjustly ; for no one of them (they say) has seen the king's writ (granting it to him), nor on his side the man who gave him seisin. It is and was worth 3 pounds, al- though it pays 3 4 pounds. XLII. THE LAND OF ROBERT DE STATFORD [STAFFORD] IN WANETINZ [WANTAGE] HUNDRET Robert de Stadford [Stafford] holds DENCHESWORDE 4 [South Denchworth B ] of the king and Laurence holds it of him. In Testa de Nevill (p. 123) ' Suthdenches- wurth ' has a knight's fee belonging to the Hon- our of Stafford (F.W.R.). then (assessed) at 6 hides ; now (it is assessed) at 4^ hides. There is land for 2 ploughs. On the demesne is I ; and (there are) 4 vil- leins and 5 cottars with i plough ; and 24 acres of meadow. It is and was worth 3 pounds. XLIII. THE LAND OF RICHARD PUINGIANT IN ELETSFORD [ ] HUNDRET Richard Pungiant holds LOLINDONE [Lollingdon ]. Elmaer a freeman held it T.R.E. It was then (assessed) at 3 hides ; now (it is assessed) at nothing. There is land fo. 6ab for 2 ploughs. On the demesne is I ; and (there are) 3 villeins and 3 cottars with i plough ; and 12 acres of meadow. It was worth 100 shillings T.R.E. ; afterwards 40 shillings ; now 60 shillings. When Richard received this manor he found it in the ferm of Celsei [Cholsey]. It is now separate therefrom. The same Richard holds AVINTONE [Avington 7 ]. 8 Gunnere held it of King Edward. It was then assessed at 10 hides ; now (it is assessed) at 2 hides. There is land for [ ]. On the demesne are 3 ploughs ; and there are 6 villeins and 7 bordars with 3 ploughs. There are 4 serfs and a mill worth (de) i o shillings, and 2O acres of meadow and woodland to render (de) 10 swine. It is and was worth 100 shillings. XLIIII. THE LAND OF ROGER DE IVERI IN BORGELDEBERIE [BuCKLEBURY] HUNDRET Roger de Ivrei holds of the king i virgate in ELINGE [Eling 9 ]. Sawin held it of King Edward in his manor of Enrede [Hendred]. This Roger transferred it to his manor of Harewelle [Harwell] (misit in Harewelle to which it never belonged (ubi nunquam jacuit) so the shire(moot) testifies, nor did it ever pay geld. There are 4 villeins with 2 ploughs and woodland to render (de) 30 swine. It is worth 20 shillings. In Cholsey, now in the Hundred of Moreton. Berks. Arch.
