A HISTORY OF BERKSHIRE LX. THE LAND OF BERNARD THE FALCONER IN TACEHAM [THATCHAM] HUNDRET Bernard the falconer holds WALSINCE [? Wasing 1 ] of the king. Alwin held it of King Edward in alod. It was then assessed at I hide ; it is now assessed at half a hide. There is land for 4 ploughs. On the demesne are 2 ; and (there are) 5 villeins and I bordar with 2 ploughs ; also i serf, and a mill worth (de) 1 6 shillings. It is and was worth 3 pounds. LXI. THE LAND OF RAINBALD OF CIRE(N)CESTER IN BLITBERIE [BLEWBURY] HUNDRET Reimbald of Cirecestre [Cirencester] holds HACHEBORNE [East Hagbourne 2 ] of the king. He held it of King Edward. There are 1 5 hides there ; but then as now it was assessed at 12 hides all but i virgate. There is land for 12 ploughs. On the demesne are 2 ploughs ; and (there are) 18 villeins and 16 cottars with 10 ploughs. There are 6 serfs and a mill worth (de) 12 shillings and 6 pence, and 30 acres of meadow. It was (formerly) worth 15 pounds ; now 18 pounds. The same Reinbald holds ESTONE [Aston Upthorpe ? 3 ]. Eileva a free woman held it T.R.E. Then (there were) 10 hides there ; but it was assessed at 6 hides then as now. There is land for 7 ploughs. On the demesne are 2 ploughs ; and (there are) IO villeins and 12 cottars with 5 ploughs. There are 3 serfs and 41 acres of meadow. It was (formerly) worth i o pounds ; now 1 2 pounds. LXII. GRIMBALD'S LAND IN WANETINZ [WANTAGE] HUNDRET Grimbald holds HENRET [West Hendred 4 ] 6 of the king. Achi a freeman held it T.R.E. It was then (assessed) at 5 hides ; now (it is 1 Now in the Hundred of Faircross. J Now in the Hundred of Moreton. This passed with his other lands to Cirencester Abbey at his death (Testa,?. 125) (J.H.R.). 3 Now in the Hundred of Moreton. The Abbey of Cirencester, according to Testa de Nevill, held ' quoddam manerium Eston de dono Regis Henrici avi (I.) fundatoris.' This holding, in Feudal Aids, 1428, i. 65, is half a knight's fee and is in Aston Upthorpe. THE LAND OF TEODRIC THE GOLDSMITH IN NACHEDEDORNE [ ] HUNDRET Theodric the Goldsmith holds ELLEORDE [Aldworth 6 ] 7 of the king. Edward held it in alod of King Edward. It was then (assessed) at 5 hides ; now (it is assessed) at 2 hides. There is land for 5 ploughs. On the demesne are 2 ploughs ; and (there are) 6 villeins and 4 bordars with 3 ploughs. There are 4 serfs and woodland to render (de) 10 swine. It is and was worth 100 shillings. IN BoRGELDEBERIE [BuCKLEBURY] HuNDRET The same Theodric holds HANSTEDE [Hampstead Norris 8 ]. 9 Lane held it of King Edward. It was then (assessed) at 1 7 hides ; now (it is assessed) at 6 hides. There is land for 1 2 ploughs. On the demesne are 2 ploughs ; and (there are) 13 villeins and 9 bordars with 8 ploughs. There are 8 serfs and 4 acres of meadow and woodland to render (de) 40 swine. Of this land the priest of the church holds half a hide in almoin and has nothing on it. It was (T.R.E.) worth 12 pounds ; after- wards 9 pounds ; now IO pounds. IN REDINGES [READING] HUNDRET The same Theodric holds SOLEHAM [Sul- ham 10 ] . Edward held it of King Edward. It was then (assessed) at i hide ; now (it is assessed) at half a hide. There is land for 2 ploughs. On the demesne is I plough with 5 bordars ; also (there are) 2 serfs and 2 acres of meadow. It is and was worth 30 shillings. The same Theodric holds in PORLAA [Purley 10 ] " half a hide. Edward held it ; and it was assessed at that much then as now. There is land for 2 ploughs. On the de- Now in the Hundred of Compton.
