A HISTORY OF SUSSEX were used as the cheek-pieces of bridle bits, and of which examples have been found in the river Thames ; in Heathery Burn Cave, Dur- ham ; and in the Bronze Age lake dwellings of Switzerland. There are certain difficulties as to this explanation of their use, and if the Bulver- hythe example really is one of the same group, it increases, rather than diminishes, the difficulty, because it is clearly too long for such a purpose.
