POLITICAL HISTORY The division of the county into Rapes has already been dealt with,' and a note has also been made of the probable early existence of 42* hundreds, which hid however been com- pletely split up and re-arranged previous to 1086.= At the time o£ the Domesday Survey Sussex contained sixty hundreds, the greater part of which have continued down to the present time with little alteration.
