and Doblado, and the latter being on good terms with the congress, he asked of it extraordinary powers, which were granted at once without other restrictions than that every measure of the government should be directed to the preservation of the national independence and institutions, as well as of the reform laws.^[1] Lerdo and his followers had insisted on the executive submitting to the approval of congress all action he might take in the foreign relations; but they were defeated. Congress closed its session on the 15th of December.
