CHAP. 1.
The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
2 Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judah and his brethren;
3 And Judah begat Pharez and Zarah of Tamar; and Pharez begat Hezron; and Hezron begat Ram;
4 And Ram begat Amminadab; and Amminadab begat Nahshon; and Nahshon begat Salmon;
5 And Salmon begat Boaz of Rahab; and Boaz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse;
6 And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Uriah;
7 And Solomon begat Rehoboam; and Rehoboam begat Abijah; and Abijah begat Asa;
8 And Asa begat Jehoshaphat; and Jehoshaphat begat Joram; and Joram begat Uzziah;
9 And Uzziah begat Jotham; and Jotham begat Ahaz; and Ahaz begat Hezekiah;
10 And Hezekiah begat Manasseh; and Manasseh begat Amon; and Amon begat Josiah;
11 And Josiah begat Jeconiah and his brethren, about the time they were carried away to Babylon: [1]
12 And after they were brought to Babylon, Jeconiah begat Shealtiel; and Shealtiel begat Zerubbabel;
13 And Zerubbabel begat Abiud; and Abiud begat Eliakim; and Eliakim begat Azor;
14 And Azor begat Sadoc; and Sadoc begat Achim; and Achim begat Eliud;
15 And Eliud begat Eleazar; and Eleazar begat Matthan; and Matthan begat Jacob;
16 And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.
17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon to Christ are fourteen generations.
18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was in this manner: When his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child by the Holy Spirit.
19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, purposed to put her away secretly.
20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take to thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is by the Holy Spirit. [2]
21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. [3]
22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken from the Lord by the prophet, saying,
23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. [4]
24 Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took to him his wife:
25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.
CHAP. 2.
Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,
2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and have come to worship him.
3 When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.
4 And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he enquired of them where the Christ should be born.
5 And they said to him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet,
6 And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, art not the least among the princes of Judah: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel. [5]
7 Then Herod, when he had secretly called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared.
