DEDICATION

To the Afro-American Mothers and Daughters who, in those
dark days of Our History, endeavored to be faithful
what they understood to be the Principles of Truth
and Virtue; and also to the Noble Women of
the Race who, in these brighter days,
have assiduously labored, is best
they could, to establish an
impeachable Character in
the Womanhood of
the Race;

And to the Philanthropic Men and Women of the Country,
who have done and are doing much to Elevate this
People by providing for them a Christian Education,
and have not in consequence thereof
demanded any sacrifice of their
Manhood and Womanhood;

To Charles J. Pickford, the Author's Early Friend and Benefactor;
And to the Sacred Memory of a Loving and Sainted Wife,
Lucie J. Scruggs, a most valuable helper, who
rendered much assistance, even in the
preparation of these pages;
This Volume is Sincerely Dedicated

BY THE AUTHOR.
