Question about a code
[edit]Koavf, I'm still new here and wondered about something. With this edit you added this code (seen in edit mode as <nowiki> doesn't seem to work here). What are those called? I noticed one use in North Carolina, but not other states with two words. Why did you do that? -- Valjean (talk) 16:31, 23 December 2021 (UTC)
- @Valjean: I added w:en:non-breaking spaces: these keep two terms from wrapping around a line break. E.g. It's definitely better to have:
- "We spoke to
Mr. Jeffords about it
March 3."
- "We spoke to
- Instead of:
- "We spoke to Mr.
Jeffords about it March
3."
- "We spoke to Mr.
- When to use them is a matter of some personal preference but things like dates and titles are really good candidates. I also tend to use them with short names of places that include some qualifier ("New York", "West Virgina"). If I ever don't insert one, it's just because I missed it. Note that I included them before the semicolons because you definitely don't want those wrapping around to a new line but then I was reminded that our Manual of Style recommends against spaces before colons and semi-colons. Let me know if that's unclear or you have any other questions. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 16:37, 23 December 2021 (UTC)
- That all makes sense. Thanks. -- Valjean (talk) 16:40, 23 December 2021 (UTC)
