Poems was considered by many to be the first major book of American poetry. The 1821 first edition includes the first publication of the revised text of Thanatopsis and the first publication of The Ages. The first edition consisted of only eight poems on 44 pages, but later editions were greatly expanded with additional poems on 240 pages.
