THE GIFT.
You ask of me a lock of hair:
E'en then so let it be,—
A fond memento of my love,
A gift, dear friend, for thee.

Others may seek for gaudy toys,
And some for jewels rare,
But as a pledge of friendship, I
Will give a lock of hair.

Wilt thou not lay it with thy gifts
Of fond friends far from thee,
And prize it for the giver's sake,
Thy absent friend, H. T.?
