Time is an American weekly news magazine. Founded in 1923, it is the first weekly news magazine in the United States. Many early issues are in the public domain due to failure to file a timely copyright renewal with the US copyright office.

Public domain issues of Time magazine

[edit]

Works published in the United States before 1931 are in the public domain.

Works published in the United States between 1931 and 1963 with a copyright notice, but whose copyright was not renewed, are in the public domain. Works copyrighted before 1964 had to have the copyright renewed sometime in their 28th year. Time failed to renew the copyrights of many early issues. A search of the renewals for periodicals for entries for Time reveals that the publisher, Time Inc., started renewing the copyrights of Time magazine in 1962 with the 29 January 1934 (vol. 23, no. 5) issue.[1] In addition a few later issues were also not renewed. The table below lists the public domain issues of Time magazine. Note that photos or articles appearing in the non-renewed public domain issues of Time may still be covered by copyright if they were published prior to their appearance in Time (with notice and renewal) or otherwise separately renewed.
