STATUTES IN FORCE

GUIDE TO THE EDITION

(dated 1st August 1981)

ADDITIONAL NOTE

1st November 1984

(To be filed in date order as the third Additional Note immediately following the Guide)

COMMENCEMENT ORDERS

Where any Act contains a commencement power dependent upon the exercise of which some or all of its other provisions come into force it is the practice to state in cumulative supplements and revised re-issues of Acts whether or not such power has been exercised and, if it has been exercised, to state whether it has been exercised fully or in part and to record the Statutory Instrument numbers of any instruments ("Commencement Orders") exercising such powers. Additionally in cases where a single date is appointed for the commencement of the whole of an Act for all purposes by one instrument it is the practice to specify that date: in other cases it is not the practice to give any particulars as to commencement and for these reference should be made to the relevant Commencement Orders themselves.

Subscribers who wish to see speedier and more detailed particulars of the operation of Commencement Orders should obtain them from Her Majesty's Stationery Office, which will accept standing orders for all Commencement Orders made by Statutory Instrument, or for such Orders limited to England and Wales or to Scotland. On the basis that there are between 55 and 70 Commencement Orders each year the cost at the date of this note is estimated at £35-£40 a year. It is recommended that Commencement Orders obtained by this means should be punched and filed immediately after the Act to which they relate.

Standing orders, and enquiries about placing a standing order, for the supply of Commencement Orders should be made in writing to

HMSO Publications Centre
P.O. Box 276
London SW8 5DT

(Specific items may be ordered by telephoning HMSO's telephone order number 01-622 3316 but standing orders cannot be dealt with on this number nor can enquiries).
