| Notes: | Roosevelt apparently wanted a request from the Grand Army before issuing the order; Brainerd H. Warner (a committee chairman) obliged and sent the request, which (along with other information) is printed in The Evening Times (Washington, D.C.) of August 20, 1902, page 2, column 1.
At least one other similar order had been issued before -- an unnumbered Executive Order on September 16, 1892 (see here) closed government offices on September 20, 1892, for another of the GAR's parades. |
