The e-text used from the University of Adelaide is not supported by scans, and does not identify the source upon which it was based.
In proofreading the novel I have been using the original version published in McClure's Magazine in 1900-01; this includes adopting the inconsistent (often American) spellings used in that edition. Variations of that sort and punctuation changes have not been identified. More substantive changes have been noted by striking through the McClure's version that has been omitted or changed, and enclosing in brackets additions or changes introduced by the newer version.
