| Notes: | The original publishing of this poem in The Outlook used the word "regret" as opposed to "despair" in the last stanza of the poem. Boston composer Amy Cheney Beach (Mrs. H. H. A. Beach), however, would later request that the word be changed to "despair" upon deciding to set the poem to music. In a letter to Mrs. Beach dated 8 September 1908, Mrs. Coates gives her permission for the change, stating that the change shall be made to "all future imprints" as it is a more "singable word."[1] |
