Spacing and layout[edit]

As the text in this work is so dense, to aid reading the following conventions have been adopted.

1) Character names - abbreviated and italicised per the text but on a separate line.

2) Character speech - separate line, immediately following name.

3) Character entrances - centred and italicised per the text. For entrances between separate character speeches, a blank line either side. For those in the midst of a speech, no blank lines.

4) Character exits - right margin, either at the end of the line of speech, or on separate line, depending on whether it affects the wrapping of the line of speech. Chrisguise (talk) 10:05, 2 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Formatting[edit]

Although the work started off being formatted using <poem></poem>, the majority of it is now done using {{ppoem}}. The older elements are (slowly) being migrated.

Most of the work is in verse but there are parts which are not (usually low social status characters). In these cases, line layout has been preserved as if it were verse, except where there is a hyphenated word at the end of a line. In such cases, the word is recombined and placed at the end of its line, or the start of the next, whichever balances the line lengths best.

In some cases, a line of text is too long for the width of the printed column. If so, the final word (or part thereof) is printed at the right margin, usually on the line above. These 'stray' words are repositioned/reconnected with their associated line of text.Chrisguise (talk) 10:13, 2 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Text transcription[edit]

The only changes made to the text as printed are that:

1) The occasional occurrences of 'vv' for 'w' have been converted to 'w'; and

2) The long 's' has not been reproduced.

Unfortunately, abbreviated words (e.g. ye, or the use of ō to indicate oo.) have not been treated consistently. In some cases they have been expanded, in some cases replicated, and in others done using superscript (e.g. yt). In part this was driven by the fact that the specific templates, such as {{ye}} didn't work properly within {{ppoem}}, but this now seems to have been fixed.
