At school, back in the 50's, we were taught to sing the second and third lines differently. Maybe this was an alternate set of words which were introduced, or just the choice of our teacher.

There is a land where summer skies are gleaming with a thousand eyes, winking and blinking in harmony, in harmony......etc

We were told that it refers to the clear summer starry night skies in Oz, and it still makes more sense to me now than the original, which we didn't know existed at the time!

Our teacher spent a lot of time ensuring that, when singing it at assemblies etc that we had a definite break at the "d" in "thousand" before singing the word "eyes" to avoid slurring the words together. Or, maybe, to avoid confusion with the original words if sung incorrectly!

It would be interesting to know if anyone else learnt these words.
