Talk:The Atlantic Charter

It should be noted that neither FDR nor Churchill used the term "Atlantic Charter" until their joint statement was so named by the London Daily Herald, a Socialist newspaper, about August 19, 1941. There never was a signed copy. It was a plain, typed press release and not a signed "document" of any sort. There is no original document except for the coded text that FDR sent to his press secretary, Stephen Early. The poster we've all seen was printed as propaganda by the Office of War Information. (Do a search of "OWI No. 50" as the poster is Number 50.) It was printed in 1943. At a press conference on December 19, 1943 FDR stated that "no one signed the Atlantic Charter." And that was the truth.
