The is not the Isabel F. Hapgood translation, published 1886.


Neither does it match word for word with the unattributed translation that appears in these publications: Taras Bulba, St. John's Eve and other Stories, (appearing as "Akakiy Akakievitch's New Cloak") Vizetelly & Co, London, 1887; or in these two collections published by P. F. Collier & Son Company, NY: Short Story Classics (Foreign) Volume One Russion, edited by William Patten, 1907, and Greatest Short Stories, Volume 6, 1915.

Or this otherwise rough translation, a very different version, titled "The Mantle," in The Mantel and Other Stories, translated by Claud Field, Frederick A. Stokes Co., New York, date 1916?

These pagescans gives only one clue regarding who the translators were. Page:Best Russian Short Stories.djvu/4 says that this edition is "COPYRIGHT, 1917, BY BONI & LIVERIGHT, INC." so we might be able to find more details by identifying the 1917 edition.
