One sentence didn't make sense : "In the place of conical hats and small-swords, of lace and snowy periwigs, there were cobblestones". So I checked for another version of this novel and hplovecraft.com seems to have the more logical and probably original text: "In the place of conical hats and muskets there were three-cornered hats and small-swords, and lace and snowy periwigs.
