  1. பாகற் கொட்டை புதைக்கச் சுரைக்கொட்டை முளைக்குமா?
    Will a bottle gourd spring from a págal seed?
  2. பாசம் அற்றவன் பரதேசி.
    He who has no ties is like a foreigner.
  3. பாடகக்காலி வாழ்ந்தால் பத்து எட்டுச் சனம் பிழைக்கும்.
    If the foot-ringed lady prosper, eight or ten people may be supported thereby.
  4. பாடம் ஏறினும் ஏடு கைவிடேல்.
    Though you have learnt your lesson, do not throw away your book.
  5. பாடிப் பாடிக் குத்தினாலும் பதரில் அரிசி இல்லை.
    Though pounded with a song, chaff will not yield rice.

    Though you may ascend the bier, forsake not your alms-dish.

    He speaks as if arrows were darting forth.
  11. பாதகர் பழக்கம் பாம்பொடு பழகல் போல.
    Friendship with the wicked, is like playing with snakes.
  12. பாதிச் சுரைக்காய் கறிக்கும் பாதிச் சுரைக்காய் விதைக்குமா?
    Can you take half a churaikáy for curry, and use the other half as seed?
  13. பாத்திரம் அறிந்து பிச்சை இடு, கோத்திரம் அறிந்து பெண் கொடு.
    Give alms to the worthy, and your daughter to one of a good family.
  14. பாப்புக்கு மூப்பு இல்லை.
    Brahmans have no chiefs.
  15. பாமணி ஆற்றிலே பல்லை விளக்கு, முல்லை ஆற்றிலே முகம் கழுவு.
    Begin to clean your teeth at Pámani river, wash your face in Mullai river.
  16. பாம்பாட்டி பாம்பிலே, கள்ளன் களவிலே
    A snake charmer understands snakes, a thief understands thieving.
  17. பாம்பிலும் பாம்புக்குட்டி விஷம் அதிகம் வீரியமும் அதிகம்.
    A young snake is more poisonous and vigorous than an old one.
  18. பாம்பின் குட்டி பாம்பு அதன் குட்டி நட்டுவாக்காலி.
    The young one of a snake is a snake, and its young one is a scorpion.

    Property not looked after perishes.
  42. பாரைக்கு ஊடாடாப் பாறை பசுமரத்தின் வேருக்கு ஊடாடிவிடும்.
    The rock that resists-a’ crowbar, gives way to the roots of a tender plant.
  43. பார் ஆளலாமென்று பால் குடிக்கிறாய்.
    Thou drinkest milk, hoping to govern the world.
  44. பார்க்கக் கொடுத்த பணத்துக்கு வெள்ளிக்கிழமையா?
    Is Friday a sufficient excuse for not returning the coin given you to look at?
    It is believed by many that, though it is fortunate to receive money on Friday, it is unfortunate to pay it.
  45. பார்க்கிற கண்ணுக்குக் கேட்கிற செவி பொல்லாது.
    A listening ear, is worse than a seeing eye.
  46. பார்த்த கண்ணும் பூத்துப் பகலும் இரவு ஆயிற்று.
    The eyes have failed by looking too long, and night has followed the day.
  47. பார்த்த முகம் எல்லாம் வேற்றுமுகம்.
    All the faces we see are diverse from one another.
  48. பார்த்தாற் பசுப்போல, பாய்ந்தால் புலிப்போல.
    In appearance like a cow, in action like a tiger.
  49. பார்த்திருக்கத் தின்று விழித்திருக்கக் கை கழுவுவான்.
    Gazed at-by starving beggars-he eats and washes his hands.
  50. பார்த்திருந்தவள் பச்சை குத்தினாள், கேட்டிருந்தவள் வறுத்துக் குத்தினாள்.
    She who had seen the process pounded it undried, she who had heard of it pounded roasted.

  51. பார்ப்பதற்கு அரிய பரப் பிரமம்.
    It is impossible to comprehend the supreme Brahma.
  52. பார்ப்பாத்தி அம்மா மாடு வந்தது.
    Brahman matron, the cow has come.
  53. பார்ப்பாத்தி உப்புக்கண்டம் போக்கடித்ததுபோல.
    As a brahman woman lost her salted mutton.
  54. பார்ப்பார் சேவகமும் வெள்ளைக் குதிரைச் சேவகமும் ஆகாது.
    The service of a brahman, and the care of a white horse are bad.
  55. பார்ப்பானுக்கு வாய்போக்காதே ஆண்டிக்கு அதுதானும் சொல்லாதே.
    Do not waste your breath on a a brahman, nor converse with a mendicant.
  56. பார்ப்பான் கறுப்பும் பறையன் சிவப்பும் ஆகாது.
    A black brahman, and a fair pariah are not trustworthy.
  57. பார்ப்பான் ஏழையோ பசு ஏழையோ?
    Which is the more helpless, a brahman or a cow?
  58. பாலருக்குப் பலம் அழுகை, மட்சத்துக்குப் பலம் உதகம்.
    The strength of a child is crying, and that of fish is water.
  59. பாலர் மொழி கேளாதார் குழல் இனிது யாழ் இனிது என்பார்.
    Those who have not heard the lisping of their own children say, that the flute is sweet, the stringed instrument is sweet.
  60. பாலான நெஞ்சு எல்லாம் பகை ஆக்கினான்.
    He has made enemies of all whose hearts are pure as milk.
  61. பாலுக்கும் காவல் பூனைக்கும் தோழன்.
    He is the guard of the milk, and also the friend of the cat.
  62. பாலுக்கு வந்த பூனை மோரைக் குடிக்குமா?
    Will the cat that has come for new milk, drink buttermilk?

    The milch cow is known by its calf, and the child of the wealthy by its face.
  77. பால் வார்த்து முழுகுவான்.
    He will bathe after applying milk to the head.
    Intimating that a person inimical has been got rid of.
  78. பாவட்டம் பூப்போல நரைத்தும் புத்தி இல்லை.
    Though as grey as a pávattam flower, he has no sense.
  79. பாவத்திற்கு இடம் கொடாதவன் பாவத்தைச் செயங்கொள்வான்.
    He who does not give place to sin, will conquer it.
  80. பாவம் செய்யாதிரு, மனமே!
    O my heart, do not sin!
  81. பாவலர் அருமை நாவலர் அறிவார்.
    The ability of a poet is best known to the learned.
  82. பாவியார் போன இடம் எல்லாம் பள்ளமும் திட்டியும்.
    Whithersoever the simple go, they meet with ups and downs.
  83. பாவியைப் பிடித்துப் பாம்பு ஆட்டுகிறது.
    Seizing a simpleton and making him dance like a snake.
  84. பாவில் இருக்கிறது பார்த்தும் இருக்கிறது.
    That which is described in poetry is also seen in nature.

  85. பாழாய்ப் போகிறது பசுவின் வாயிலே.
    That which is spoiled is put in the mouth of a cow.
  86. பாழ் ஊருக்கு நரி ராஜா
    The jackal is king in a deserted village.
  87. பானையில் உண்டானால் அகப்பையில வரும்.
    If in the pot, it will come into the spoon.
  88. பானையிலே பதக்கு நெல் இருந்தால் மூலையிலே முக்குறுணி தெய்வம் கூத்தாடும்.
    If there be a pathaku of rice in the pot, three kurunies of gods will dance in the corner.
