Letters.

Of the 56 letters of the Telugu alphabet, 51 are used in this Dictionary, and they may be represented in the Roman character as follows:

Vowels.

అ a, as in delta. ౠ rí, as in ream.
ఆ á, as in father. ఎ e, as e in mendicant.
ఇ i, as in pin. ఏ é, as e in grey.
ఈ í, as in pique. ఐ ai, as ai in aisle.
ఉ u, as oo in good. ఒ o, as o in police.
ఊ ú, as oo in food. ఓ ó, as o in story.
ఋ ri, as in rill. ఔ au, as ou in foul.
ం Anuswara m or n. ః Visarga-h.


Consonants.

Gutturals.

క k, as k in king.

ఖ kh, aspirate of the preceding as kh in pack-horse,

గ g, as g in garden.

ఘ gh, aspirate of the preceding as gh in gig-horse.

n, as ng in angle. 

హ h, as h in hunger.

Palatals.

చ ch, as ch in church or ts, as in beats.

ఛ chh, the aspirate of the first చ as in coach-horse.

జ j, as j in jelly or dz, as in torridzone.

ఝ jh, the aspirate of the first జ j.

ఞ ñ, as gn in mignon or ni, in onion.

శ ś, as s in sure.

య y, as y in yellow.

Cerebrals.

ట ṭ, as t in trump.

ఠ ṭh, the aspirate of the preceding.

డ ḍ, as d in drum.

ఢ ḍh, the aspirate of the preceding.

ణ ṇ, the cerebral n.

ర r, as r in rule.

ఱ rr, as in worry.

ళ ḷ, the cerebral l.

ష sh, as in shop.

Dentals.

త t, as t in taper.

థ th, the aspirate of the preceding, as th in sweet-heart.

ద d, as in divine.

ధ dh, as dh in adhere.

న n, as n infancy.

స s, as s in sin.

ల l, as 1 in manly.

Labials.

ప p, as p in pen.

ఫ ph, the aspirate of the preceding, as ph in philosophy,

బ b, as b in number.

భ bh, as bh in abhor.

మ m, as m in demand.

వ v, as v in marvel.

The dismissed letters are the two Iris which are rarely met with in the language, the అర్థానుస్వార ardhanuswara which although a nasal is yet almost impreceptible and the second చ and జ.
