This template is for headers of articles from the Appletons' Cyclopædia of American Biography.

|previous =
|next =
|wikipedia =
|wikipedia2 =
|other_projects =
|edition =
|author =
|fictitious =
|suspicious =
|extra_notes =
|override_notes =
|section =

The template goes at the top of an article. The previous and next should be filled in, even when those entries have not been created yet. This template is to be used at the top of every entry in the Cyclopædia.

  • | previous =
    • Type in the name of the previous entry. It will create a link to it.
  • | next =
    • Same as above but goes to next entry.
  • | wikipedia =
    • Link to wikipedia article. Fill in the name of the article for this parameter. If there is no wikipedia article, leave it blank or remove it.
  • | wikipedia2 =
    • Parameter for a second, relevant wikipedia article.
  • | other_projects =
    • Links to Wikimedia projects, for example Wiktionary, Commons, etc. It can also be used for Wikisource links and when more than two Wikipedia links are desired. Please format it to include the name of the project referred to (if not Wikisource): Article Name at Project Name. Well chosen external links are also a possibility when there is currently no relevant Wikipedia article.
  • | edition =
    • This is for noting the year of publication for the edition from which the article was obtained.
  • | author =
    • If the author of the article is known, that name can be assigned here. No link is created, so if it is needed the value for this parameter must be a link.
  • | fictitious =
    • If this is one of the about 200 fictitious entries currently (2011) known, this parameter should be set to a value; just x or yes is convenient.
  • | suspicious =
    • If a search has turned up no confirmation of the person outside of Appletons' and derived sources, and no verifiable source has as yet described it as fictitious, this parameter should be set to a value; just x or yes is convenient.
  • | extra_notes =
    • This is useful for notifying the reader of significant changes since the article was published, or other useful information about the article not appropriate to the previous parameters.
  • | override_notes =
    • This is useful when this template is used as a header for pages in this project which are not articles from the Encyclopedia. Its use should be restricted to such contexts. If set to nothing, the usual default notes will not be displayed. If set to some text, that text will be displayed instead of the default notes.
  • | section =
    • This is useful in extraordinary situations where the normal display of the SUBPAGENAME is not desired. For example, it is used to implement the examples below since otherwise the SUBPAGENAME of this documentation page (doc) would be displayed instead of the SUBPAGENAME of the article (Blenker, Louis) for which the header would be used.

The page name for any article using this template as a header should be prefixed by Appletons' Cyclopædia of American Biography/. This prefix is followed by the name of the subject, last name first, for example Appletons' Cyclopædia of American Biography/Schurz, Carl.

| previous = Blenac, Charles de
| next = Blennerhassett, Harman
| wikipedia = Louis Blenker

No Wikipedia link[edit]

| previous = Blenac, Charles de
| next = Blennerhassett, Harman

Two Wikipedia links and author[edit]

| previous = Hayes, Philip Cornelius
| next = Haygood, Atticus Green
| author = Carl Schurz
| wikipedia = Rutherford B. Hayes
| wikipedia2 = Lucy Webb Hayes

For articles where there are more than two subjects that have Wikipedia articles, use the other_projects parameter. See George Morton for an example.

Don't display notes[edit]

| previous = Hudde, Andreas
| next = Hudson, Charles
| fictitious = x

| previous = Steinhauer, Henry Bird
| next = Steinitz, William
| suspicious = yes

In the long run, the use of this parameter should be temporary. Either at some point a verifiable source should identify this person as fictitious, in which case the fictitious parameter should be substituted; or at some point a verifiable independent confirmation outside of Appletons' and derived sources should be located, in which case the suspicious parameter should be removed and extra_notes or other_projects used to indicate the verifiable independent confirmation.

Extra notes and edition[edit]

| previous = Andrew, John Albion
| next = Andrews, Christopher Columbus
| edition = 1891
| extra_notes = This entry does not appear in the 1900 edition.

Other projects[edit]

|previous = Ulloa, Francisco de (explorer)
|next = Ulrich, Charles Frederick
|edition = 1889
|other_projects = Herman Ulphilas at German Wikipedia

This parameter is also useful for articles where there are more than two subjects that have Wikipedia articles. See George Morton for an example.

When there is no relevant Wikipedia article, well chosen external links can be used. For example, before a Wikipedia article was developed, Henry Bird Steinhauer's header appeared as:

|previous = Steiner, Lewis Henry
|next = Steinhefer, Juan
|other_projects = Henry Bird Steinhauer at Alberta Online Encyclopedia, Steinhauer, Henry Bird at Dictionary of Canadian Biography
|edition = 1900
