Template:Edition/doc

From Wikisource

Usage

[edit]

This now-deprecated template was used in the Notes = field of {{header}}, to direct users to the Talk page of the work. Normally, no parameters are need for the template so it is simply used thus:

{{edition}}

Placing this template at the top of any text page of a work and the corresponding Talk page should contain Template:Textinfo data (talk). This will alert the reader that information about the edition is available on the Talk page.

|title= can also be used to specify a Talk page other than Talk:{{PAGENAME}}.

Deprecation

[edit]

This is still in use because {{header|edition=yes}} uses {{plain sister}} which implements |edition=yes differently than this template does.

First, {{plain sister}} links to {{TALKSPACE}}:{{PAGENAME}} which is different than always linking to the main talk space as this template links to Talk:{{PAGENAME}}.

Second, {{plain sister}}, does not implement a replacement for the |title= parameter of this template, so it cannot link to other main talk pages. It is commonly used to link to the talk page of a main page that is a base page of the current page (so things like chapter subpages can link to the edition documentation of a base page).
