SCHMITZ, Eugene F., American politician: b. San Francisco, 19th century. He was elected mayor of San Francisco on the Union Labor ticket in 1900 and was twice re-elected. In 1907 he, with Abe Ruef (q.v.), was tried on a charge of extortion in connection with the sensational graft scandals then uncovered.
